Rights Respecting School

UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. In 1989, governments worldwide promised all children the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfill their potential.

The ‘Rights Respecting School’ award (RRSA) will help our pupils to grow into confident, caring and responsible young citizens both in school and within the wider community. By learning about their rights our pupils, your children, also learn about the importance of respecting the rights of others.

We, at Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, have been on our journey to becoming a Rights Respecting School since 2015 and were awarded our Level 1 status (now know as Silver status) as ‘rights aware’ after meeting all the criteria set by UNICEF in May 2017. In 2019 we achieved the Gold Standard award.

At our school, the Rights Respecting Team plays a key role in helping everyone understand and live by the values of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This dedicated group of students
and staff work together to ensure that children’s rights are at the heart of everything we do.

What we do:
The Rights Respecting Team deliver the spotlight article each month and it is shared with parents in the newsletter. Each week, the Rights Respecting Team update the school newsletter, sharing the important work being done and what is coming next.
The team regularly listens to feedback from pupils across the school to help make improvements and ensure every child feels respected and included.

Following pupil voice, the Rights Inspecting Team introduced a school wide initiative to promote rights respecting language.

Our team help organise events like World Children’s Day and Kindness Week, making sure these link to important rights such as the right to be safe and the right to be heard.
